In the SCA we use a unique calendar – we count our years from the date the SCA was founded in 1966. You will encounter these dates in SCA newsletters and on award scrolls. Our years are expressed as Anno Societatis* (or A.S.) followed by a number, usually expressed in Roman numerals.
* Latin for “in the Year of the Society”, and pronounced Sow-see-uh-TAH-tiss or Sow-key-uh-TAH-tiss, or Sow-chee-uh-TAH-tiss, depending on where you learned your Latin.
May 1st was the day that the First Tournament was held in 1966. Therefore, April 30th is the last day of the SCA year, and May 1st is the SCA’s “New Year’s Day”.
