Welcome to Wintermist

We are the home for the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA). If you are interested in history and want more than to just read about it or play games based around it, we are the place for you.
The SCA divides the World into chapters called kingdoms, and further divides the kingdoms into local territories. We are the local territory for Kern County. Continue reading and see a bit of what we offer.

What We do

The SCA is devoted to the research and re-creation of pre-seventeenth century skills, arts, combat, culture, and employing knowledge of history to enrich the lives of participants through events, demonstrations, and other educational presentations and activities. To explore more of the SCA click the button below. Close that window and swipe to the next slide when you are ready to read more about your Local Chapter.

Combat

Of course we have combat as an activity. In fact we have many types. Pictured here is what we call Armored combat. It is with weapons made of a specific wood (rattan) against opponents in armor that meets specific requirements. We hold wars, where it is two or more sides fighting in groups against each other, and tournaments, where it is one to one combat.
Next, if your dreams are more about swashbuckling... (swipe below to continue)

Rapier

For those who grew up on Three Musketeers, The Princess Bride, and other swashbuckling sagas, Rapier combat is for you. We have a very active rapier community here in Wintermist and host a large event just for Rapier each year. For more info on Rapier combat click the button below.

Archery & Thrown weapons

If you grew up imagining feats of incredible accuracy, whether it was Robin Hood or Ogasawara Nagakiyo shooting their bows, William Tell and his crossbow, or Achilles throwing his spear, we have you covered. We have an active archery and thrown weapon community here in Wintermist. Come out to a practice and try your aim!

Arts and Sciences

Wrapped into everything we do is the arts and sciences (A&S). If it was built, made, or crafted before 17th century, someone, somewhere in the SCA does it. Cooking, Brewing, Leatherwork, Calligraphy, woodworking, metal working, on and on! We have local meet ups to learn new skills or support each other in current projects. There are also several larger events dedicated to classes in the arts each year. The button below will show you more about a few of our Arts and sciences.

Crafting in the SCA

So, what do we do with all this?

We have different types of events throughout the year. There is an event somewhere almost every weekend depending how far you want to travel. Some people go to events a couple times a year, some people go to multiple events a month. You can choose your own pace. Some events are wars or tourneys, focusing on one or more of the martial activities we do. Some are courts, feasts, and revels, where music, food, drink, and dance abound. Other events focus on learning new skills either arts and crafts or martial. Some are camping others are not. There is something for everyone.
Our Kingdom, called Caid, covers Southern California, the Las Vegas area, and Hawaii. Check out the calendar of events to see what type of things go on.

Now you know...

The SCA is a group of people, around 60,000 strong, spanning the globe, all brought together by a common interest in history and having fun recreating it. We hope to see you at a meeting, meet up, or event in the future. We have an officer called a Chatelaine, whose job it is to welcome and help newcomers. Click the button above to go to our main site and look around. when you are ready to reach out go to the officers page and send the Chatelaine a message.
Welcome home.
