Volunteers are the lifeblood of the war, and we need you on our front lines!

Each hour worked earns you tickets for the Volunteer Raffle held after court on Sunday.  Some volunteer positions earn double and even triple the tickets!

Volunteer hours also earn money that is donated to the official SCA group of your choosing (such as guilds, offices, or geo-political groups like Baronies or Shires).

Give us two hours and we’ll give you a war to remember!

How to Volunteer

To volunteer online for Potrero, please navigate to the War Volunteer Sign-Up page, where you can view open shifts and sign up for as many as you’d like. If you know you will be available on certain days, but can’t commit to specific time slots, sign up in the Volunteer Pool. This Pool is our first stop for filling open positions during war.

You always have the option to sign up for open volunteer shifts on site at Base Camp, so if you can’t commit to specific days or times before getting to site, there will be plenty of opportunity to volunteer during war.

Please don’t forget to get your volunteer card from Base Camp or the Volunteer Staff. You should record your scheduled shifts on your card as a reminder of where you’ll be serving. We are counting on you to be there at the time and day you indicated. Please don’t let us down!

In order for your hours to count for raffle tickets or donations you must have your shift signed off by the shift lead or attending steward.

Make sure you return your completed Volunteer Card back to the Volunteer Staff. This helps us plan better for future wars, and lets us know who to give funds for your volunteer time.

Giving generously of your time greatly lightens the load for everyone. With your assistance we will have a great War!

Volunteer for the Setup Crew

Volunteers are needed to help prepare the war site for our guests. Shifts are available for general Setup Crew and Haybales. Since people are needed to help check-in the crews, Wednesday Porter shifts have been added this year. If you’d like to be on the Setup Crew, Haybales, or Wednesday Porter, please navigate to the Setup Crew Sign-Up page.

Please Note
Signing up for the Setup Crew only indicates your willingness to serve on the Setup Crew. This does not guarantee you will be accepted. There is a limit to how many Setup Crew personnel we can have on site, so we will be selecting from the signed up volunteers. If you are approved, you will receive an email confirmation.

The requirements to be considered for Setup Crew are:

  • Able to lift 30lbs or more
  • Stand on your feet for 30 minutes at a time
  • Able to walk the entire length of the park several times in a single day
  • You must have land allocated, pre-registered, and completed registration payment in order to get on site for Setup Crew!

We love the youth of our barony, but if your young children cannot participate in set up crew we ask that you leave them at home and bring them back to war to participate in all the wonderful youth activities.

Volunteer for the Tear Down Crew

Volunteers are needed to help tear down the war site–many hands make light work.  There will also be a special After War Raffle for the Tear Down Crew only.  If you would like to help with this very important job, please navigate to the War Volunteer Sign-Up page, and select the Tear Down Crew task.

We will have a Special Volunteer Raffle for the Tear Down Crew on Monday afternoon.

The requirements to be considered for Tear Down Crew are:

  • Able to lift 30lbs or more
  • Stand on your feet for 30 minutes at a time
  • Able to walk the entire length of the park several times in a single day

We love the youth of our barony, but if your children cannot participate in the Tear Down Crew we ask that you please not bring them to this activity.

Youth Volunteer Opportunities

Youth (ages 13+) can also find opportunities to help at war. A number of positions accept youth volunteers, which will be noted in the description on the iVolunteer site. During war, Base Camp will know which shifts are cleared for youth volunteers. Children under the age of 13 may volunteer when accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Restricted Positions and Positions Not Listed on iVolunteer

You may notice that some volunteer positions are not listed or are restricted, such as Lead Positions, First Aid, and Exchequer, but that does not mean we don’t need volunteers!

Due to the extra requirements involved, some positions are noted as restricted. Each restricted position on iVolunteer will have specific instructions for how to sign up & an email address for you to submit your request, along with any required information. If you are approved, you will receive an email confirmation.

If you wish to volunteer for a restricted position, please sign up for an open Volunteer Pool slot. This will ensure that you have a user profile in the iVolunteer system. Once we receive approval, we will move your Pool entry to the requested restricted slot.

For positions not listed on iVolunteer, please contact the Volunteer Staff via email at volunteers.steward@potrerowar.sca-caid.org, or during war at Base Camp.

Donate Your Volunteer Hours

Your volunteer hours generate funds for geopolitical groups (Kingdom, Barony, Shire, etc), guilds, fund raisers (travel fund), etc. If you’re not sure whether you can donate to a specific group, check with Base Camp or the Volunteer Staff. The revenue generated from volunteer hours helps guilds purchase supplies, hold classes, and reimburse teachers. They help territories purchase infrastructure, spruce up or buy new regalia, and so much more. When you turn in your volunteer card, remember to clearly indicate where you want your funds donated.

Personal and private households are not eligible to receive volunteer hours funds.

Questions?

If you have questions, need assistance with signing up for volunteer positions, or want to volunteer for a restricted position such as Gate Lead please email us at volunteers.steward@potrerowar.sca-caid.org.
