Archery Range

Welcome to archery at Potrero War!

There will be two archery fields, the hay wall and the target mats. Please see the schedule in the gatebook for the event timetable.

Scheduled events will begin at the listed times, please arrive early to ensure your participation! The schedule is subject to change with or without notice.

The range will be closed for lunch from Noon to 2pm but may remain open for practice if a warranted marshal is present.

Authorizations are not required for shoots, but archers should have previous archery experience. Basic Archery instruction is generally available during normal range hours at the hay wall range.

Loaner Gear & Beginner Instruction

Loaner archery gear will be available for archers who do not have their own equipment. A limited amount of time will also be available for beginning archery instruction for both adults and youth at the hay wall range.

Training for beginners is generally held during normal range hours on an as-needed basis. For safety, the number of beginner archers at a time may be limited. Training may also be limited or unavailable during the Youth Royal Rounds from 2pm-4pm, Friday and Saturday. Please come to the range for updates and thank you for your understanding.

Range marshals and Range marshals-in-training (RMIT)

We will need range marshals on each line throughout the day. Please volunteer at least two hours of your time if you are a range marshal or RMIT. RMITs are welcome to work on their checklists at the war. Sign up to volunteer online, at Base Camp, or at the archery range. Please remember to have the Archery Steward or Deputy Archery Steward sign off on your volunteer time card!

Range assistants

We will also need volunteer range assistants at the check-in table and to help with equipment. Previous archery experience is helpful, but not required. Volunteers can sign up online, at Base Camp, or at the archery range.

Potrero Championship

The Potrero archery championship will include an adult and youth open handbow divisions. If there are enough interested participants, there may also be a period handbow and crossbow divisions. Winners of each division will be recognized in court.

Royal Round Tournament

Royal rounds will be held throughout the event, and archers can enter as often as they like. Information on Royal Rounds can be found at this website: https://scores-sca.org/home/index.php?R=39

“The target used in the Royal Round is a standard, 60cm, five-color, round target face. The round consists of an end of six arrows from each 40 yards, 30 yards, and 20 yards, with a 3-minute time limit at each range. This is followed by a 30-second *speed end, shot from 20 yards. There will be a sighting end of six arrows before each slow end at 40, 30 and 20 yards. In some competitions, the sighting end may be eliminated or the number of arrows reduced.
*speed end consists of as many arrows/bolts you can loose safely within 30 seconds.”

Night Shoot

For safety this shoot is closed to beginner archers. If you have never practiced archery before, do not feel safe shooting in the dark, or are unfamiliar with the Caidian rules of the line, we ask that you observe instead of participate. We reserve the right to remove archers and observers from the field for safety. Participants and observers are asked to help with cleanup after the event, you can keep your glowsticks!

Prizes

We need donations of prizes for the both the adult and youth archery competitions. Prizes don’t need to be archery related or new – items of general SCA interest and gently used items are welcome.

Foam mats

We will be shooting at foam target mats again this year. Waxing arrows is recommended to make them easier to pull. Paste wax will be available at the range. Please ask for assistance if you have trouble pulling an arrow.
