Class Description: Ever wonder what a service dog is? How is a service dog different from a ESA (Emotional Support Animal), a Therapy Dog, or a pet? What is the proper way to interact with them and their handler? What is required for a dog to be a service dog? What about those online registries? Are you hurting anyone when you try to pass your pet off as a service dog? How can events be more accessible to service dog teams? Bring your questions, your open mind, and a willingness to learn. You will have a chance to meet a Service Dog in Training and learn all sorts of things you may not have known about these canine knights in fancy vests.

What to Bring: Questions and a desire to learn. Something to take notes if you wish.

Class Description: We’ll go over some common forms of period lamps burning vegetable oil instead of modern oils. Then you’ll make one with a jar, braided wire wick holder, and cotton wick, which you can take back to camp to light your table that very night!

What to Bring: Work clothes that you won’t mind getting a little oil spilled on, and work gloves if you feel you need them.

Class is meeting and Arts & Sciences but will be heading to the lake.

Class Description: Baskets are made of plants! Plants come from nature. Nature is generous but we need to be wise.

So come learn how to harvest safely and respectfully & get the right stuff. If all goes well, you’ll leave with a bundle of cattails to take home to weave!

You’ll also learn how to dry your cattails at your camp and how to prepare them for use.

Cutting tools & bundling twine will be supplied.

Class Description: In this class, we will cover the historical foundations and applications of lace and lacemaking in the 16th – 17th centuries. I will briefly demo a basic overview of needle lace (reticello(a)/punto in aria) made without a fabric ground using Grace Gamble’s method, but I will spend the majority of the time focused on cutwork needle lace (Punto Tagliato) on a linen ground. You can follow along with me as I go, but good needle lace takes an incredible amount of time for setup and execution. You will receive materials to make a basic square of needle lace.

What to Bring: Very sharp pointed embroidery scissors & good tweezers.

Class Title: Viking Embroidery for the Creatively Challenged

Class Description: Viking Embroidery for Beginners. Does your Viking Garb need a bit of flare but you aren’t sure how to start, or how to implement a Viking design concept or you lack confidence in your skill? This class is for you. We will start with the basics, cover several stitches and with every stitch add confidence to your design.

Must be able to reliably identify a needle. Class includes all necessary items. Students will leave with a Viking Bag and a beginning embroidery kit.

Class Title: Knitting in the Round

Class Description: This simple but elegant band was found in the Oseberg ship burial and is one of the most securely dated and located Viking bands. Students will learn how to warp their Card Weaving looms to weave this pattern. This class will show participants how to transfer images onto leather and learn how to use a swivel knife to carve the basic lines of their image. Class Description: Do you want to talk about art, research, crafts, or science? Come to the Laurel Hunt Meet-Up!

Laurel Hunt is an A&S version of the popular Chiv Hunt, because artisans like noble quests, too! How it works is simple:

1. Find a Laurel at an event.

2. Ask them 3 questions about their art (or science, research, etc.), and, if feasible, have them show you their art.

3. Answer 3 questions from them about your art, and, if feasible, show them your art.

4. Thank them and have them sign your book. When you have a minute, write down what you learned in your book.

If you’re a Laurel, please come down and talk to some unwreaths about their art. If you’re an unwreath, show up and give those Laurels someone to talk to!

Class Description: Chasing and Repoussage are historical metal working techniques long used in jewelry making, household ornamentation and armor making. Learn safety principles and ergonomic techniques. We’ll discuss and use chasing tools, pitch bowls, torches and modern shortcuts in order to make your take home pieces.

Section I is devoted to getting a design transferred, learning to use the chasing tools, and working a practice piece on different types of pitch. Prerequisite for Section II. Beginner to Intermediate.

What to Bring: Legs and feet must be fully covered. No long scarves, sleeves or draperies. Long hair must be secured. You may get wet!

Class Fee: $45.00 for use of chasing tools, hammers, pitch bowls, torches, supplies and pieces of copper. Includes class handouts.

Class Description: In this class you will learn how to use a foam disc to create Kumihimo cord with 3 different designs – spiral, checkerboard, and honeycomb.

Class Description: Braiding is a fun, period method of cord-making! Every ancient culture used twisting, braiding and knotting of fiber to make yarn, cording, rope and to trim fabric. The Vikings used a braid as straps for their embroidered aprons as well as other purposes that required cord. Students will learn how to swing bobbins with yarn to create patterned cord. This is super fun, and children and adults are encouraged to attend!

Class Description: Chasing and Repoussage are historical metal working techniques long used in jewelry making, household ornamentation and armor making. Learn safety principles and ergonomic techniques. We’ll discuss and use chasing tools, pitch bowls, torches and modern shortcuts in order to make your take home pieces.

Section II is devoted to getting your own design transferred to a new 20-22 g. piece of copper sheet and worked on both sides. Those who wish may cut out their piece with metal shears and/or jewelers saw.

What to Bring: 2″ x 2″ (or smaller) Heraldic device or historical design on printer paper. Legs and feet must be fully covered. No long scarves, sleeves or draperies. Long hair must be secured. You may get wet!

Class Fee: $45.00 for use of chasing tools, hammers, pitch bowls, torch, supplies and pieces of copper. Includes 2nd class handout. Bring additional $ if you wish to purchase a smaller piece of sterling (.925) sheet, price depends on current market value.

Class Title: Embroidery 101 – 8 period stitches

Class Description: Using Mistress Ealasaid nic Subhine’s handout “8 Period Stitches” this class will demonstrate those stitches and go over embroidery basics. This class is a beginner level overview but can be of use to experienced stitchers as well. You’ll have a sampler of stitches when you are done.

What to Bring: No materials necessary. Kits will be available for use during the class and if you want to keep it, you can do so for a small fee.

Class Fee: Suggested donation for handout is $1.00 to cover printing costs. If you would like to keep the supply kit after the class, they are available for $5.00

Class Age/Class Size Limit: Class is for anyone 10 and older. Minors will need to be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. I’ll have at least 10 kits available, but any number can audit the class.

We will try out some basic moves using beginner-friendly wild-harvested materials to make a simple flat round. You can use it at War as a portable seat cushion, as a trivet at Feasts, or as the beginning of a basket!

You will get a spray bottle to keep ( it’s THE essential tool!), links to resources, tips for harvesting materials, and a peek at finished baskets in different styles.

This under-appreciated art is a big tent with space for everyone – Type A’s and type B’s, cheapskates and big spenders can all find their happy place!

[If you wish to harvest some materials at the lake to take home for yourself, check the A&S schedule for the field trip down to the lake edge. Enough for this class project are already supplied, but if you join the harvest you’ll have some to take home for later! ]

What to Bring: Be ready to get a bit wet! And maybe some dirt. Short sleeves or sleeves you can roll up are best.

Class Description: Viking Embroidery for Beginners. Does your Viking Garb need a bit of flare but you aren’t sure how to start, or how to implement a Viking design concept or you lack confidence in your skill? This class is for you. Must be able to reliably identify a needle. Class includes all necessary items. Students will leave with a Viking Bag and a beginning embroidery kit.

Class Description: In this class you will learn how to warp your loom for card weaving. We will demonstrate a continuous speed warp and a traditional multi-color warp.
